Because the January meeting of the Bluemont Civic Association was cancelled due to snow, we are posting this brief update for the information of our BCA neighbors.
In late October, the BCA established the Bluemont Village Center Task Force; its charter is posted on this website under “Charter.” You can reach either of the co-chairs, Carla Aly or Kate Mattos, through the email addresses listed in the “About” tab.
The members of the Task Force have taken a number of steps to better understand what types of development are possible under the current Safeway C-1 area zoning, that is, what development options Safeway could pursue “by right.” The information we collect will be compiled in an assessment and study that will be shared with BCA members.
Over the past several weeks, Task Force members have met with staff of the Arlington County Planning Division and of the Zoning office. We are scheduling meetings with members of the County Board to learn first-hand of their perspectives, and those meetings commence this month. Because of the importance of the Safeway site to others, we also reached out to adjacent civic associations’ leaders.
The Task Force has attempted to reach Safeway to obtain an update of plans, but as yet has not received a response from its representatives.
The parameters of the work of this Task Force is shaped by last April’s BCA vote, reported in the BCA May 2013 newsletter, which you can read here: http://www.bluemontcivic.org/newsletters/BCA_News_201305.pdf Also, the work of the Task Force will be informed by the views expressed in the BCA Neighborhood Conservation Plan, which was approved by the County Board in December. This combined with other factual information about the possibilities under C-1 zoning will shape draft reports that the Task Force will present to the BCA for input and review.
We will keep you informed and don’t hesitate to contact us with questions.
